Public Charging Infrastructure for EV’s - A Barrier to Entry or an Opportunity?
For some time now, poor range and higher upfront costs of Electric Vehicles (EVs) were a barrier to entry for many drivers considering switching to electric. Now, with more than 300 different EV models expected to debut by 2025, and driving ranges easily exceeding 300 km on one charge, it seems there is a new challenge that is appearing. If consumers continue to purchase EVs at the expected rates in the next several years, lack of charging infrastructure may pose a threat to widespread EV adoption.
A Rising Demand in electric cars
Automakers around the world have begun to show their interests in EV products. Toyota and GM have extensive plans to add 10 and 20 new EVs to their product lineup, respectively. Other automakers also joined the race.
Ford - Investing in new EV models
Ford has pledged over $11 billion to develop EVs by 2022. 40 EVs totally will be produced, of which the Ford 2020 Escape is bound to be the first one to get to market. Ford is stepping up the game with new designs, longer ranges and new technologies.
Renault - Ambitious EV sales goals
Renault has sold 200,000 EVs already, but that does not stop them. New plans have been developed: 10% of Renault’s sales in 2022 will be electric vehicles. Renault’s goal is to launch 20 electrified models by 2022, of which eight are fully electric vehicles. The automaker has also decided to invest $1 billion by upgrading their EV facilities in France to boost their local EV production. A dedicated facility to construct the Renault Zoe will be included in the upgrade. The Zoe is Renault’s best selling EV marked accounting for nearly 20% of the total EV sales in 2018.
Jaguar Land Rover - Charge points at the HQ
Jaguar Land Rover recently installed the UK’s largest smart charging facility at their headquarters with 166 NewMotion charge points. Jaguar Land Rover’s employees and guests can take advantage of convenient and fast charging, powered by 100% renewable electricity. JLR is moving forward to the next level of producing only electric vehicles, which will be implemented from 2020 on.
Daimler - One EV in each new series
Together with Daimler we are offering smart charging solutions for EV fleets. With this partnership we grant access to tailor-made solutions for all charging requirements. To add to their holistic approach, Daimler has plans to produce more than 10 fully electric vehicles by 2022 and they will electrify their entire Mercedes-Benz portfolio to offer customers at least one electric alternative in every series.
With the predicted substantial growth of EVs in the next few years, industry stakeholders are now left with the challenge of ensuring that there is sufficient public charging infrastructure to support the growth and maintain energy affordability.
As these energy, grid, and charge point demands rise, charge networks and charge point providers have prepared in an interesting fashion.
Charge Network Compatibility - A Solution
In Europe, one of the solutions to catering to the increasing demand of public charge points was to create compatibility across a constellation of networks operating around the continent. In addition, several countries in Europe have implemented government grants to encourage drivers to install charging infrastructure and to make charge points more accessible to drivers. The Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) in the United Kingdom and Advenir program in France are two examples.

The UK’s Government has set up the OLEV grant to encourage and support electric cars. Also known as The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), the Government offers £500 off the purchase and installation costs for a home charge point.
The Advenir program of Energy Savings Certificate, also known as Certificats d'Économies d'Énergie (CEE), is a regulatory mechanism that obliges energy suppliers to save energy by undertaking various actions such as Advenir. Companies and public entities will be supported with 40% of the supply and installation costs of charge points and for residential owners this is 50% when participating in this program.
